Iowa’s general prejudgment rate uses the same Iowa Code §668.13 selection as post-judgment interest: the State Court Administrator’s monthly one-year Treasury CMT value plus 2 percentage points, selected as of the judgment. The published table changes monthly, but an individual judgment does not reset every month. Entitlement and the accrual start still depend on the claim and governing statute.

When Iowa prejudgment interest applies

Sections 535.3 and 668.13 govern the general judgment-interest path, including interest for the period before entry. A lawful contract rate can control under §668.13(2). Future damages do not earn interest before judgment, and §625.21 separately addresses verdict-to-final-entry interest in actions outside chapter 668. Workers’ compensation and support obligations have their own §535.3 rules.

When it starts accruing

The general §668.13(1) path begins on the date the action is commenced. Future damages begin only on entry of judgment under §668.13(4). Section 625.21 instead adds interest from verdict or report until final judgment in covered non-chapter-668 money cases, so the correct start date depends on the claim.

Simple or compound

Ordinary §668.13 interest is computed daily to payment and treated as simple interest. Structured or periodic non-lump-sum judgments use annuity principles under §668.13(6). The statute does not itself specify every day-count and payment-allocation mechanic.

How the rate is set

The State Court Administrator publishes a monthly one-year Treasury constant maturity selection from Federal Reserve H.15; §668.13 adds 2 percentage points and selects the rate as of judgment. It is not a weekly-average series and does not float month by month after judgment.

Iowa's §668.13 rate selected at judgment is also used for qualifying prejudgment interest. The Judicial Branch table selected a 4.06% one-year Treasury CMT for this date; adding two points gives 6.06%. Interest generally begins at commencement, while future damages begin at judgment. Contract and other statutory paths may differ. Not legal advice.
