Michigan uses MCL 600.6013 for the complaint-to-judgment portion as well as post-judgment interest. The general subsection (8) reference is currently 4.959%: the official five-year Treasury benchmark plus one point, compounded annually. The statute applies calculation intervals from complaint filing; the January and July dates are certificate dates, not a complete payoff schedule.

When Michigan prejudgment interest applies

For the general current branch, MCL 600.6013 runs interest from complaint filing through satisfaction and is not limited to liquidated claims. Complaint dates before July 1, 2002, qualifying written instruments, tort settlement offers, medical-malpractice cases, and future damages have separate statutory treatment.

When it starts accruing

For covered complaints, subsection (1) does not allow interest on future damages from complaint filing through judgment entry. Interest on that future-damages component begins at judgment. Other covered amounts in the general subsection (8) path run from complaint filing through satisfaction.

Simple or compound

Annual compounding is specified for the general subsection (8) and current written-instrument subsection (7) branches. Exact six-month application intervals, annual anniversaries, day count, payments, and every older complaint-vintage branch remain outside the calculator.

How the rate is set

Michigan Treasury certifies a five-year Treasury benchmark for January 1 and July 1. The general subsection (8) rate adds one point, but the statute applies the rates in six-month intervals from complaint filing. Current certificate (effective July 1, 2026): 3.959% + 1% = 4.959%.

For the general MCL 600.6013(8) path, Michigan's complaint-to-judgment interest uses the official Treasury benchmark plus one point and compounds annually. For covered complaints, future damages do not earn interest before judgment; that component begins at judgment. Written instruments, tort settlement offers, medical-malpractice rules, older complaint dates, and exact six-month application intervals require separate treatment. Reference only; not legal advice.
